A workshop for individual partners of law firms plan what next – once called ‘retirement’

Book our 11 June workshop, at the Law Society, 113 Chancery Lane, London, UK

Partners who retire from their practice without thinking through a retirement plan are often less successful, less happy and have poorer mental health. With the 100-year life now a realistic target, partners can find themselves retired for longer than they worked. These days, planning for retirement/your future means looking at the next 20-30 years, not just 3-5 years.

Throughout your career, you will have gained an abundance of skills, experience and networks but how do you use them when you are no longer under the umbrella of the firm’s brand?

Your Future Workshop dispels the fears and risks that you may have about retirement and life after being a partner. It opens a positive dialogue on transitioning into your new phase of life perhaps in a new voluntary role, as a NED, mentoring, setting up a new business or adding value to your local community.

Whichever direction you take, Next-Up can help you with inspiration and ideas; skills to make your plans work; and a route map towards ‘unretirement.’

What to expect from Next-Up’s June Workshop

  • You will have greater understanding of your transferable skills and the confidence to use them – but this may not be in the way that you had in mind.
  • You will meet retired peers and hear about their journeys – what worked for them and what didn’t
  • You will have a better understanding of the NED route if this is of interest – and who is most likely to get NED roles.
  • You will develop skills to expand your networks, create a new personal brand and confidently see yourself as an individual beyond your existing firm’s brand.
  • You will learn how to maximise your existing connections and where and how to make new ones.
  • You will achieve a more positive end to one career and a positive start to the next phase in your life.
  • And you will learn the secrets to a long and healthy life – it’s all about sleep!

Law firms spend a lot of time and investment in lawyers’ early training and careers but not later on for the transition beyond partnership – leading to the loss of expertise and leadership.

Evidence shows that when firms help partners to plan for their retirement, this gives you greater confidence about your future and enables you to have more open and honest conversations about your plans and how your firm can support you.

This is a full day workshop run by presenters from, Next-Up and includes:

  • 5 retired peers sharing their stories – what worked for them and what didn’t
  • Video clips with expert tips on developing your future
  • An expert head-hunter and a NED discussing NED and board roles and how to get them
  • An expert on over 50s health – what you thought you knew and didn’t
  • An entrepreneur mentoring session to focus on your breadth of skills
  • Pre and post workshop activities and support
  • A workbook to complete which is your aide memoire going forward

Chatham House rules – this is a safe place where our guest speakers are going to be very open and tell you how it is, challenges and all. Some of this may be uncomfortable, please join in as much as you feel you want to.

This workshop is being offered to Law Society members at a discounted rate of £1,200 per delegate.

Places for this workshop are limited and will be filled on a first come first served basis. Reserve your place now on Eventbrite and pay via invoice
